Vestry
The Vestry, as we know it today, is a distinctly American institution in the local government of the Church. It was not until the late Middle Ages that a layman was given official recognition in the parish as church warden, with the responsibility of keeping the nave of the church in good repair. By the time of the Tudors in England, the whole parish met as a vestry, with any resident eligible to attend. These meetings were held in the room where the vestments were kept and took its name--the Vestry.
The Constitutions and Canons of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southern Virginia provide that each parish shall have an annual congregational meeting at which the elections of Vestry members shall take place. The Vestry shall include the member of the clergy in charge and not fewer than three nor more than eighteen adult confirmed communicants. St. Andrew's Vestry consists of fifteen members, five elected each year to serve a three-year term. Persons are ineligible for re-election for at least one year after serving their term.
The Vestry elects the officers of the vestry which consist of a Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Register, and Treasurer who shall continue in office until their successors are elected.
